Chris-
  You are right about the SS fasteners. They generally are of lower =
tensile strength than the high-tensile alloy (carbon) steel fasteners. =
If ultimate strength is your goal, go with the high-strength steel =
items. The SS units are for low strenght/high visibility applications.
 McMaster -Carr Supply sells fasteners "per each" when they are the =
larger sizes. Even "per 100"(smaller sizes), the cost isn't =
prohibitive.

  These are not particularly expensive, especially when you consider =
that you=20
  are only buying a few. The factory ones are high grade and have the =
nice=20

companies=20
  generally want to sell in quantities of 100. (Once found an=20

  P.S. I don't know much about stainless steel fasteners, they might be =
a=20
  bit brittle, but I would use them in areas that are not too highly=20
  stressed.  I noticed that Lowe's hardware/lumber stores carry a nice=20
  selection for stainless steel metric fasteners. If we have a =
metallurgist,=20
  materials engineer or other person with actual knowledge about =
stainless=20
  steel fasteners maybe we can get some insight in regards to their=20
  application to automotive uses. I don't recall Carroll Smith =
mentioning=20
  stainless steel fasteners in his book. Will have to look it up.
