Quite OT: NYTimes.com Article: TV Ads Say S.U.V. Owners Support Terrorists

Not to mention that the V-10 TDI Toureg will come with an outrageous amount
of torque. . . Something like 550 ass kicking ft/lbs. and about 310~320 hp

by the way, there will also be a VR6 and W8 model.

Julie....a big factor, outside of the SUV movement, that has killed the gas
mileage....and that is: Saftey requirements. As the standards get higher
and higher, the cars get heavier and heavier. Our mk1s weigh around 2000
lbs. You can't buy a new VW that weighs less than 2800. And the lightest
car you can buy right now? The Honda Insight...wieghs 1700 or so, and gets
insane mileage. The gas mileage craze is starting....just look at the
evidence out there, VW cant keep TDIs on their lot (even at 2800 lbs, the
car can get 55mpg and is quicker than the 2.0 8vs. The Jetta Wagon TDI
seems to be made of unobtainium right now...guess why? Carrying capacity of
a SUV, with the gas mileage of a diesel), Honda is selling the Insight and
now the Hybrid Civic, Toyota with the Prius, etc. There is a growing market
in the US, and a growing distain for SUVs....I only hope it continues. Oh,
and speaking of SUVs....the VW Toureg is due here soon...and VW has said it
will come with the V10 TDI as an option...gas mileage in an SUV? You bet,
and VW is starting it.

A friendly public service announcement from one of the resident diesel
freaks on the list :-)
