shift points for older engines]

ok....so, after changeing my fuel/air ratio, air filter, sparkplugs, and
turning my idle back down, I'm at 19mpg (plus it's up to 0 degrees C
from -15 last week)

I changed my timing today, as recomended by my mechanic, to 6 * advance
I bumped it before I had a chance to check what it was at, but I think it
was around 25* advance

could somebody tell me what effects advancing/retarding the timing on the
engine and performence of the car, I have an idea but only what I've guessed
for myself, nobody's ever explained it really, lol

thanx
    George

and thanx for the help everyone!!

12 mpg? Something's gotta be wrong. I get almost 40 from the exact same
motor!
My motor's different, but I got way better than that this summer with the
mixture way off the map on the rich end...
