OT: "UnWise" files suddenly found on my PC

Sounds kind of like a virus. I would run a virus scan and then pop your Windows CD in. I think it has a repair function, so that it will replace missing files and stuff without having to reinstall on top of your previous OS or format and reinstall. I've never used the repair feature myself though so I don't know how useful it is. Also, sometimes computers just screw up for no apparent reason and you just have to straighten them out. Also get some spyware killing programs. There's 2 common, very good and free ones out there, but I forget what they're called. Others will know. A program called 'Trojan Remover' is an excellent virus killer and has I think a 30 day free trial, but cracks are very easy to come by. UnWise files are most likely spyware, but could also be a poorly coded virus or if you have Norton Systemworks, the anti-delete/trash program that protects certain files from accidently getting deleted. Good luck!

This is in XP Pro

My wife was doing her usual stuff on the computer. Then I tried to start Minesweeper (I'm kinda addicted to it) but couldn't.

Upon restart, it hung up for at least a couple minutes when I got warning windows about trying to open some .dll file.

Opened my Task Manager, and closed all the Unwise and all the warning windows.

Tried to start IE (usually my default browser), and it said that it was no longer my default.

What gives? Did I pick up a virus? I was going to delete all fo the Unwise files but I don't want to screw anything up.

Any ideas?

Thanks, Jeff
