Diff Question...
You talking about an open differential? If so, the differential only "locks" when it doesn't need to, i.e when both wheels are turning at the same rate.
A differential cannot "slip" in the way that a clutch can. A good differential will always be sending power to at least one wheel. If it's not, then it's GONE and the noises will be obvious.
If it is gone, then your options are:
A) replace transmission
B) rebuild differential
C) put car up on blocks in front yard and keep chickens in it
D) use car as parts/donor car for cheap listers
E) tape large cardboard wing and front spoiler to it and
sell it on Ebay as a unique, one-of-a-kind collector's item.
F) leave it in the garage until the wife divorces you over it,
then give it to her as part of the settlement, keeping the
new Audi for yourself

Subject: Diff Question...
Sooooo, when your tranny is in gear, the diff is supposed to lock to a
certain amount of pressure right? You shouldn't be able to just freewheel it
with liitle effort, right? If the diff is hosed on my tranny, what are my
options? Would this cause a "slip" similar to a worn clutch?
Thanks!
