I had the self adjuster go on me a few years ago. I replaced it with a manual one, it snapped in one year, and I was glad it did because I did not like the way the manual one felt. So I switched back to the self adjuster and have been happier with it and it has lasted 4 years so far. Brian 86 16v 98 Jetta Vr6
