OT: Question for the Americans

1) living in the past. yeah, lots of oppression in the past, but not just
blacks--irish, italian, japanese (intern camps?), hispanic. deal with it. my
mom grew up in projects, dad was a poor immigrant. i don't feel anyone owes
me anything. and guess what? anyone under the age of 30 is subject to random
pull-overs and harassment. and though it sucks, these are the people most
likely to commit crimes. fact is, you still can express your opinion, and
you still benefit from living in the us. you still are able to pull yourself
out of the ghetto, and do what you wish with your life.

2) about saddam. no, he doesn't have nukes now, but he's close, and
everyone's willing to concede that. and do you really need a mushroom cloud
for proof that he has them? more importantly, it doesn't matter that he's
going to use nukes, but just that he has them. having nuclear capability,
and the threat of using it, gives you a huge amount of leverage politically.
example-pakistan and india. at the brink of war not many months ago.
india's army is waaay bigger than pakistan. but pakistan has nukes, and
threatened to strike first if invaded. the result was that india's superior
conventional army couldn't do anything. pakistan is much more powerful than
it would be otherwise. compare with iraq; if they have nukes, a conventional
war becomes much more dangerous--iraq would be able to do much more without
fear of reprisal, because of the increased risk of a conventional attack.
anyway, bottom line is that i (and many americans) are willing to be more
"proactive" to keep terrorist attacks from happening again, and if our
military actually has to be used (instead of just threats), so be it. in my
book, anything done in the middle east is justifiably self defense. (and i'm
dating a muslim girl from libya, btw--go figure).

3) alan greenspan controls the economy, which has moved in cycles every 5-10
years for the past 100 years. greenspan by himself controls the interest
rates, which have by far a greater immediate impact on the economy than
anything bush can do. the most anyone can due is to limit the extent of a
recession-you can't keep it from happening. greenspan, btw, has been in
power for reagan, bush, clinton, and bush again.

jeez cathy, thanks for starting this thread...
