1.8T Swap in Mk1

1.8T swaps are not for the light hearted, that is for sure. lots of
problems with clearance, and tons of electrical to do. If you did want to
do a 1.8T swap, starting with a early Audi A4 engine is your best bet,
they still had throttle cables instead of fly by wire. Your 2.0 8v swap
and a 1.8T swap are in two wholly different realms. To my knowledge,
there aren't any A1 chassis 1.8T swaps that have been done by the home
mechanic, all the ones I know of where done by shops. I had seriously
considered a TDI swap into my rocco, till I learned of all the issues with
fly-by-wire, the blocks not having the proper mounting for the passenger
motor mount, etc. Unless a 96 or 97 Passat TDI lands in my lap for cheap,
I am sticking to the 2.0 16v. (Early Passat TDIs were throttle cable...)

Seriously Sal, take a step back and look at the situation. 1.8Ts are
EXPENSIVE to aquire (especially with all the wiring and brain and
injection you'll need). The 2.0 8v or 2.0 16v is hands down the simplest
and best bang-for-the-buck out there. I know of someone locally that has
14 2.0 ABA blocks that he can't get rid of, they are starting to get CHEAP
(like $450 complete cheap). Just as an example...
