O2 sensor question

I have a question about 02 sensors.  Will they go bad
if you ground them to the body by accident??

Reason I ask, is I am trying to tune my sds fuel
injection with a mixture meeter.  I bought a 4 wire O2
because you can ground it to the battery rather than
through the exhaust (more accurate reading).  I asked
a friend to look up which colors were which & he told
me the wrong ones.  So, I put the signal wire to
ground & the ground to the signal.  Is this thing
toast?  I am at work and haven't had time to check. If
its junk I don't want to waste time trying to make it
work.  I haven't started the car yet, but 02s are
essentiall always working right?  Or is is just when
they heat up.
