Basic things you can do include advancing the timing a bit, adding a more
agressive cam, G-grind or better and a larger free flowing exhaust.  If your
82 has the toilet bowl exhaust manifold you can swap it for the
later/earlier dual outlet also.

That said, pitch the boat anchor 1.7 and find a high compression 1.8 RD
motor from an 86 GTi to swap in.  You trade off the 75 HP for 106?  And
really only have to add a knock sensor to make it go.
