[Re: Making a lightened flywheel]



I lightened my own, it was a piece of cake.

I ID chucked it, not cranking it too tight.  I indicated and shimmed
behind the jaws so axial runout was minimum, about 0.002" IIRC.  I had
to rotate the spindle CW (facing the chuck) and cut with a LH tool;
taking lots of light facing cuts from "back" or far side of the
lathe(cutter moving towards me), cutting from the OD to the ID.  No
biggie, just had to work the part and tool into the lathe's capacity.

I only cut the weight ring off, flush with the PP mounting surface.  I
lost nearly 4lbs.

I didn't even have to pull the locating pins out.

Balance was darn near perfect, I had it and the PP balanced together, a
tiny tiny dimple was all they had to put into the part to get it nearly
perfect.

It's been in for about a year and a half without the slightest problem.
