Thats one possible cause. 

It can also be from the ignition switch not giving power to the coil
while cranking. (turn the key, motor turns over and fuel pump runs, 
injectors deliver fuel until...) Then when you release the key (Starter
motor stops, injectors still injecting fuel which is all unburnt and
pooling in the cylinders...) the ignition system comes online. BLAMMO! 

Plausable.
