JH 8v knocks when cold

Also make sure you are using a quality filter with the appropiate back flow
valve. The back flow valve keeps oil in the upper half of the motor after
you shut it off. Without it all the oil has to be pumped up there again
when you start the car. This takes a little extra time to get oil to the
upper moving parts. Of course its worse when it's cold.

If you are using a Fram then ditch it immediatly as they are one of the
worst filters on the market. Either use the factory filter or a good after
market filter. I use the Purolater Pure One. There was a web site
somewhere where some guy cut apart all the filters he could find and ranked
them on how good the filter media was and how they were built. I don't
remember the sight but he ranked the Purolater and the Mobil 1 filter as the
best. Fram was bottom of the barrel.

a few questions, do you have a block heater or oil pan heater on this girl ?
if not it could be the bearing of the valves complaining for the oil is take
its time to get there., an oil pan heater or block heater will keep the oil
ay 70'f and will reduce the "cold morning knock" in my humble experiences
with Canadian 8 months out of the year.

Hey all,
now that temps are dipping well below 20F here, I have noticed in the
morning when I start up my '84(stock 1.8 JH with 8k on rebuild), it sounds
as though it is knocking. Not like an insane erratic knock, but a constant
knock-knock-knock-knock, well you get the idea. What's going on? The sound
goes away once warm. I'm running Mobil-1 synthetic 10w-30 if that has
anything to do with anything. Thanks to any who can provide even the
slightest info/help on this-
Rob
