front strut housing cap q's

I have the opportunity to pick up a used set of
bilstein sports (front inserts) for $30.  The only
catch is the strut caps are mostly rusted away.  Would
it be possible to modify the vw caps to accept the
larger bilstein piston?  Could this be done on a drill
press?  (This is for an a2 btw, but I don't think that
there would be much variation from an a1.)
