(ot) passat brake light failure

Oh Patrick, you didn't read the post again. He did swap out the switch but
he didn't tell us the source of the "new" switch.

Do a continuity test on that switch if it was used, it might have been out
of it's original car for a reason. If you don't have a multimeter, get a
flashlight bulb, a "D" cell, some wire and electrical tape and make yourself
a tester.
