(ot) passat brake light failure

somewhere between work and home tonight the passats brake lights quite 
working. checked fuses, bulbs, and swapped out the brake light switch 
located by the brake pedal but still no lights. anyone with a passat bentley 
or passat knowledge have an idea what to look at next? is there a relay for 
the brake lights? tia
