In Brian's defense, when you say a "buttload" of mechanical problems haven't been addressed, keep in mind the size of Mac's butt. It may only be half a buttload for him. He also has pesky things like extra Koni's lying around. I think you can find a $1k car that would be just fine once you replace the engine and cover the body in Riegerness. You aren't asking much at that point.
As for the $1k 2.0l, I'll be about at 1k on mine when it goes in. Heck, someone was just selling one with headwork done and a motronic setup for $800. Besides, didn't the car in the ad have no engine work at all?

Voodoo math! $1k for a "nice" car, and $1k for a "new" 2.0 rebuild?
And that $1k car is "BRAND new" with just a body kit and paint job?
How many $1k 'rocs have even semi-serviceable interiors, not to
mention a buttload of mechanical problems not addressed in your
figures?
