central locking ?

Check the wiring in you CLS system. Every winter when it starts to rain,
mine shorts out/goes on the fritz and has to be fixed when rainy season is
over.

Also, the system will lock the fuel door.

I have the same issue. I cannot leave the hatch lock in the "unlocked"
(parallel to the ground)position and remove the key. It only turns 4/5 of
the way - I can open the trunk by pushing in the key at that point...I've
always thought it was just a bum lock and was planning on replacing it...
What I remember about the CLS from later VWs is that you can leave the lock
in the "unlocked" (parallel to the ground) position and the CLS will lock it
when activated and unlock it when de-activated.
Has anyone actually FIXED it?? ;)

It's vacuum powered. If there's a leak then it could be the problem, but
usually the pump will run for a real long time, etc.

Probably a lock problem, proper operation is sorta like this.

When the lock is in the "open" position, the CLS controls the rear lock.
When the lock is in the "closed" position, the CLS will not unlock the
hatch.
When the CLS is locked, then you have to turn the key in the trunk to
unlock, does not matter to which position. My memory is vague, but there
alternatively might be a 3rd position for this function, one in which the
key can't be removed.

Mark,
Check the wiring to the pump, with the driver's door locked vs unlocked. The
bentley has the wiring laid out, if it doesn't seem right, then check that
the switch in the driver door is functioning, and that the wiring is right.
Try to power the pump from another power source, and see if it actully
works.

One cool thing about the CLS is that it locks the gascap flap, so the punks
can't drop nasty stuff in there just for fun.
