central locking ?

It's vacuum powered. If there's a leak then it could be the problem, but
usually the pump will run for a real long time, etc.

Probably a lock problem, proper operation is sorta like this.

When the lock is in the "open" position, the CLS controls the rear lock.
When the lock is in the "closed" position, the CLS will not unlock the
hatch.
When the CLS is locked, then you have to turn the key in the trunk to
unlock, does not matter to which position. My memory is vague, but there
alternatively  might be a 3rd position for this function, one in which the
key can't be removed.

Mark, 
Check the wiring to the pump, with the driver's door locked vs unlocked. The
bentley has the wiring laid out, if it doesn't seem right, then check that
the switch in the driver door is functioning, and that the wiring is right.
Try to power the pump from another power source, and see if it actully
works. 

One cool thing about the CLS is that it locks the gascap flap, so the punks
can't drop nasty stuff in there just for fun.
