high mileage question

Probably lots of miles left.  Mine's at 201k, still within
factory new specs compression-wise.  (low end of spec, but
still....)  It's always burned about a quart between
changes, as did my previous 16v.

On the car you're looking at, check the front crossmember
for cracking (especially near the front motor mount) and
find out when the timing belt was last changed.  VW
recommends every 60k miles but I've heard of failures
before then.  I do mine every 40k / 3 years, whichever
comes first.
