Poor-Barely Running Scirocco

  Thanks for the feedback!!!  This is an 8V, 1984 with a fairly tricked out 1.8l engine.  The battery has been relocated to the trunk for 3 or more years, so there is no more negative battery cable to the tranny housing ;-).  The main ground runs from the battery in the trunk to the frame rail the RR bumper mount goes into.  Where the old battery ground used to be there is a ground from the LF frame rail to the tranny mount ;-).  To be honest, I don't believe the car is getting richer because I pulled a couple of spark plugs an they are still grey/tan, and there is now hint of excess gas in the cylinders or moisture visible on top of the pistons or on the plugs.  Figuring the loss of exhaust temp was either because it was running way to rich, or loosing spark, the lack of signs of excessive gas made me think it was loosing spark.  That's why I was thinking that it might be a bad ground causing me to loose spark.  That may be a bad thought ;-).  Daun Yeagley suggests that I
might have a bad O2 sensor or control pressure regulator.  Just FYI the pressure regulator is a remapped one from BSI to prevent me from burning up another set of audi 1.9 pistons.  I think that's all the pertanant info.  Sounds like I need to borrow some fuel pressure guages and make sure that all my pressures are correct.  Any other things I should be looking for?

Is this an 8v or a 16v?

I'd suspect that the cold running enrichment system (for either car, but
they are different) have gone bad. Sound like as the car heats up, it gets
progressively richer.

Get back to us with the type of motor, and we can give a more thorough list
of checks. 

As for the grounds, I didn't see any mention of cleaning the mounting point
of the battery cable on the tranny mount. Check that, it gets corroded.
Also, you can add a ground cable from the battery to the casing of the
alternator. There should not be any resistance.

But poor grounds are not going to cause your problem, nor will a dying fuel
pump relay.
