my clutch problem: the mechanics input

Ahh, so you are using a 16v clutch with an 8v tranny? Definitely a problem.
Unless the original 16v motor had at some other time been converted to use
an 8v tranny then this is the source of your noise.

I should have caught this earlier, I was under the impression that the
tranny and clutch both came from the same siezed up 16v motor.

Anyway, the solution is simple.

Buy an 8v clutch disc. Pull the tranny again, and put in the 8v disc. Marvel
at how quickly you can pull out the tranny the second time around.

However, it won't be so simple if the splines on the tranny input shaft were
damaged. Easiest repair for that is a replacement tranny. Once you have the
tranny off, slide the new clutch disc over the input shaft to make sure that
there is no binding. It should slide freely.
