my clutch problem: the mechanics input

Hmm,

Stuff you've already probably checked... but are you sure that the disc is
the right one? an 84 8v tranny takes a disc with a smaller spline than a
16v, so you need to use the disc from a pre 93 8v and the pressure plate +
flywheel from the 16v. If you put a 16v clutch disc on an 8v tranny that
would be your problem there. the 16v disc has a bigger hole as the
mainshaft in a 16v tranny is bigger.

In other words, if you slid just the disc onto the tranny before
assembling everything, it should mate up with the splines on the tranny
input shaft & spinning the disc should spin the transaxles
insides. 

I know you already probably thought of this all, but its worth mentioning
when you have a mismatch like you listed that not everyone knows the
custom trick too.
