Depends on what you want to do with it.  I wanted a 3x zoom that's
easy to carry, so I got a Canon S300.  It's perfect for me, but YMMV.

Whatever you spend on the camera, you need to spend more $ for flash
memory (usually come with only 8mb - 120mb is more realistic) and a
second battery.  =20
