2.0 Engine FAQ's

The 9A block has the short rods and the ABA has the long rods. The 9a is
16v the ABA is 8v. Yes, both are 2.0 however common knowledge is that the
ABA is a smoother reving block due to the longer rods.

In order to convert an ABA block to 16v specs you must swap out the crank
pulley, oil pump, intermediate shaft, distributor hole plug and the thing
that goes under the plug for 16v units. You also have to clearance the ABA
pistons so that you don't get valve smack. Then you only get 8:1
compression. Good for high boost turbo but very weak off boost.

The Alternative to clearancing the pistons is to use 2.0 16v pistons and
have the ABA rods rebushed to function with the 20mm wrist pins used in all
the earlier blocks. This yields 9.25:1 compression. Which should not be
used with forced induction without aftermarket engine management. However,
if plans are to run N/A, the compression can be raised by shaving the 16v
head slightly, .003inch I think and by running a VW motorsport headgasket.
This should, in theory raise compression back up to 10.0:1.

alright, this is were i still get confused. which is better, the 9a block or
the aba block? a 2l block is a 2l block correct? the difference is one's a
16v and ones an 8v, so if i'm going to use my 1.8l 16v head either block
will do. or am i still missing something?
