Tach drops out and the engine stalls, then comes up again.

I had an identical problem with a Z car in the past.  The problem
turned out to be the engine computer.  Something inside was intermittent
and as the car heated up and the vibrations joustled it around,
it would just puke for 20 - 30 seconds.  Then, suddenly, the car
would run again and it would go for hours afterwards.  Your
symptoms sound identical.  

See if you can get a temp loaner of your engine computer from
someone and try it.  If the problem vanishes, your odds are good
that you found it.  If not, then you know the fault lays elsewhere.
