3 VWs and not ONE that runs... uh, help!

    if it was a shorted pump it should be taking out the fuse with it. im thinking you have an open
somewhere. the fact that its taking the tach out with it leads me to think you have an intermittent
connection for ignition power. since it seems to crank fine that leads me to think your problem is
somewhere starting at the ignition switch, running through the fuse block, and spreading out from
there. the open would have to be between the contacts in the ign switch and ending at the fan-out
point in the fuse block.
    check your fuse block for overrated fuses. put the correct ones in if necessary and run the car.
see if any blow. that should lead you to any possible short.
    try hooking a test light up to the coil power supply (ign power) and watch it as the car
sputters. the light should stay on solid.
