(sorta ot) oil canning?

was looking at an '81 cabby today, and the body area right behind the doors 
(where the rear doors would be if it was a four door) seem really thin. 
almost as if vw had used aluminium or an old gas can to metal these areas. 
also there are strange holes drilled every six inches in the door sill. 
needless to say i lost interest in the car really quickly, but has anyone 
seen something like this before?
