I don't have any help for you about the long crank but I can tell you =
that I have a similar noise on start up. I think my hydraulic lifters =
are leaking down and it's just a few revolutions to pump them up. Least =
wise I'm hoping that that's the noise. Could your noise be the same =
problem?

  Subject: hot start question

hey all! i've got a question about my 88 16v. every now and then, =
ambient temp doesn't seem to matter, something odd happens. when i got =
to start my 'roc hot one of two things happen. either a long crank =
before she starts up, i'm talking like 4-5 seconds. or it turn over =
once, stops for a second, and kicks over with what almost sounds like a =
piston slap, or some sort of light metallic knock sound. but like i =
said this only happens every now and again, other times it starts fine =
with only one to two revolutions of the engine. any ideas? when it =
"slaps" think i'm doing any damage? i know that we've got a problem =
with all of the new 4.7, 5.3, and 6.0 chevy truck engines that make a =
hell of a racket when they start up hot or cold.... but GM says that =
it's normal, and for us to tell the customer that it's normal. (they =
don't like that too much...) =20
  thanks
  corey
