oval bores?

No bore is perfectly round (depends on how many decimal places you want to
go with the measurements).  All engine builders strive for perfection,
however.
The BMW/elliptical bore statement may be a distortion of the fact that
PISTONS are not machined perfectly round, but made slightly oval, to
compensate for varying expansion (from heat) of different piston mass. ie
the piston supposedly expands more in the piston-pin direction (because of
greater mass of pin bosses) than in the direction 90degrees to the pin
(thinner, skirt area)
