European transmision gearing

Are you sure you were doing that speed? That's just short of 100MPH. I've
just put a relatively long-ratio box out of a '93 golf in mine and I get
80mph at 3250rpm, 100mph at around 4000rpm, a big improvement on the ~80mph
at 4000rpm with the stock short-ratio box I had before. In an '87 golf, you
are looking at ACD, ACN or 4T as the likely possibilities for a long ratio
box. AFAIK, they are all similarly ratioed to mine. According to ETKA, the
only golf memphis was based on a 1.3L (40KW)golf C, which would probably
have an 8N box. ratios are: FD=4.26,1=3.45,2=1.95,3=1.25,4=0.89,5=0.74.
4000rpm in 5th=85mph, assuming 185/60/14s.

HTH,

Ewan Hopkins
