Ryan, we just answered this question for TBerk just a couple of days ago.
The short answer is that your 8v will be perfectly happy with a 2.0"
exhaust. If it is a worked 2.0l, then the 2.25" size will work fine. Dont'
expect big gains from it versus the 2.0l", however. A 2.5" would be a huge
mistake. You could kiss your torque goodbye.

No change to the exhaust manifold is necessary to fit a catback exhaust.
However, if you've got the wretched "log" (4/1) manifold on there, you'll do
best to replace it with a 4/2 manifold and Techtonics (or similar) downpipe.
The biggest gains that you'll ever get on an 8v motor will come from this
modification. The 4/2 manifolds are found on the 1.7l and smaller motors.
With the better manifold, proper downpipe, and 2.0" exhaust, you'll probably
pick up an instant 20hp or so. Throw a G-cam in there while you're at it,
and you'll have another 5 horses to play with.

Nothing else delivers this much bang for the buck, so go for it without
hesitation.

How much improvement will changing my stock 8V exhaust to a 2" or 2.5"
pipe? Do I have to change the manifold?
