[Mk1gti] Performance Parts Questions

I'd work with Potter (parts4vws.com) on the clutch - he can find
lightened flywheels & things. That said, I'd not worry too much
about clutch issues/16v pp/things like that; on our FSP Scirocco,
with a .040" over JH, shaved head, portmatched intake/exhaust,
good header, TWM throttlebodies with Electromotive TecII, we ran
a stock 190mm clutch/pressure plate with a lightened flywheel -
considerably lighter than 210/16v, and no slippage problems
whatsoever with 2 seasons of hard autocross use. That engine
might not make as much torque as a 2.0, but it was a
pretty-to-very strong 1.8; we never dynoed it, but I'd guess
130-140hp - it was _way_ faster than another local GTI that had a
2.0 liter ABA block/solid lifter head, supposedly
ported/polished, with a cam & CIS - the difference in
acceleration was astounding - I expected the 2.0 to be a good bit
faster than our 1.8, but to the contrary, it was a good bit
_slower_. Dunno. When we took that clutch out, it was worn, but
not dead, and considering all the launches it had on it, the disc
looked very, very good - some heat checking on the pressure
plate, and the friction surface of the disc was worn, but no
broken/loose rivets, nothing out of the ordinary. Personally, I
think the whole 16vpp thing to be way overrated - sure, a bigger
clutch would have lasted longer in the sp car, but we were using
the 190mm unit in a car with roughly double the horsepower of
stock - no problems. Launch technique was simple - rev it to
5-6000rpm, slip the clutch with minimal wheelspin. IE, we abused
that clutch.

We're using 190mm again on our EP motor, but this time with a
Sachs sport pressureplate, same lightened flywheel & a 4 puck
solid center disc - no problems, but this motor makes ~180hp -
old Brabham SuperVee motor, _ported_ head, 48mm carbs,
Electromotive ignition, 13:1 compression, yadda yadda.

Cam gears - we have limited experience with them; I had a Drake
gear for a while, which was a modified stock gear - seemed to
work OK, but kinda heavy. Not bad for the price(free), but when
it came down to it, we got a Kent. It is light, looks good,
adjusts easily & does not do anything bad. No complaints.
