Well, the thing goes like this.   VW warranties the product for all 
manufacturer defects within the specified warranty period.  A porous  crank 
would fall under a manufacture defect.  Therefore legally if the crank breaks 
outside of the warranty period they don't have to do jack shit.  Also, the 
100,000 mile powertrain warranty becomes 50,000 miles if the car is sold to 
another person. Good luck.
