OT-89 jetta

i was working on a friends' car today and need a bit of help.....the 
car is an 89 jetta with digifant. i originally went to put in a 
voltage regulator and get the battery charged........got that problem 
solved, but now he has no spark.....anyone know if the coils on the 
digifant are interchangable with cis/cis-e ones?........any type of 
relay involved with getting the coil to fire on that injection 
system?......

any help would be greatly appreciated
