Middle Break Light Question

Before I bought my '87 16V someone had broken into it
through the rear window. When this window was
replaced, the middle break light was never
reinstalled. I'm wondering how this was ORIGINALLY
secured to the rear window? Was it some sort of
adhesive, or did the window have slots cut into them?
