Front Strut Replacement Question

What I've done in the past when I couldn't get them off is to use a cut off
wheel on a grinder. I cut the cap perpendiculat to the threads, just deep
enough to cut thru, but not enough to cut the threads on the strut tube.
Then I use a chisel and a hammer to split the cap down it's length.

I've actually ripped the knuckel mounting bracket off of a few of them
trying to force one's apart that just weren't going to come apart. It's
easier this way and I'm sure someone on the list has a couple of extra caps.

One thing to consider if you are taking an insert out of the tube. Most of
the ones I've worked on that have had stuck caps have also had their inserts
stuck too. Sometimes this can be a terminal affair as no amount of heating
or pounding will get them out.
