Front Strut Replacement Question

I removed the caps with a zip gun, pretty effective.
My shocks (Boge) came with replacement caps, so I
could not care less about scrapping the old ones. A
hammer and a cold chisel would probably do the job as
well, with a bit more patience...

btw - this isn't a salted car, I am NOT in California,
but the car IS from California (with all the smog
stuff out, of course).
