this might be the last straw



Definitly, anytime the crank and the cam shafts get out of time on an
interferance head system, you are going to get bent valves.  The reason
for this is that while the camshaft will stop moving since it is no
longer moving in time with the crackshaft, thecrankshaft is still moving
since it's connected to the tranny and your still moving down the road
in gear.  Even if you had stepped on the clutch instantly, chances are
you couldn't stop the vavles from being damages as the enertia of the
crank will cause it to continue spining.

As for the vavle being imbedded into the piston, I've seen vavles punch
holes straight though pistons before, so that's also something that
can/does happen in these situations.
