Need tranny for 84 8v

OK, I just called my mechanic because I thought my clutch had gone out 2 
months after having a new one installed, and when they pulled the tranny, 
they found the telltale hole in the bellhousing. Couldn't see it until the 
tranny was out.  Well, now my car needs a tranny.  Will 16v trannies fit my 
engine?  I know I just put a 16v tranny on my friend's Jetta III with 
basically no problems.  If anyone has any input, and, more importantly, a 
tranny they won't be using and would sell me, Let me know.
