Marc-
I noticed the same thing when I installed the Neuspeed upper brace in =
my 16V. So, I replaced the 6mm studs in the strut bearing housing with =
8mm items. Not only do these 8mm studs fit the holes in the bar very =
snugly, they allow about twice the torque to be applied to the nuts. (as =
I recall the torque value on the stock studs is like 15ft/lbs... the 8mm =
can take, I believe, 34ft/lbs)
Even with this modification, I could detect no change in the "feel" of =
the car after the installation. This may be because the design of most =
upper bars cannot, by necessity, brace the towers against each other. =
The upper strut bars are not straight and , therefore, can flex far too =
much themselves.
My personal opinion is, still, that upper strut braces don't do much. =
(personal opinion, guys, and we all got 'em, eh?)

Larry

How steady, stable are strut tower bars?

The strut tower mounts do not have really strong bolts, I know as I =
broke
some while tightening them years ago. And a nospeed ST bar has =
mounting
holes a bit bigger than the actual bolts. ok, manufacturing =
tolerance...

But you can't really tighten them down, so they are bound to move a =
bit.

I am sure that welding bars would really improve handling.

  mmm, maybe small inserts...

  Just a thought.

  Cheers.

If you dontthink the strut towers move, loosen the 2 nuts on one side =
and
take acasual drive to the store. Now look at the chaffe marks on the
towers. They do move alot actually which you dont really feel seat of =
the
  pants.
