leaking heater core

Today I notice a small dried drip of coolant on the drivers side of my
center console.  What a bummer.  I need to drive up to Maryland tomorrow
(300 mile round trip).  Has anyone had the heater core let go all at
once or does it usually just slowly leak ( I'm hoping for the later). 
Just incase, I was going to bring some hose clamps and a connector to
hook the two hoses together so that no coolant would flow to the core.
