tranny/cv/diff failure?

i got under the car today and nothing really looks broken

both wheels turn fine, and i had it running on the stands...fine, except the half shafts looked a little off centre (?)

like as they were rotating they moved up and down about a quarter inch, they were also giving off a low clunking sound with every rotation.

on the left side where the cv meets the tranny, the green seal or whatever was sticking out about a quarter inch.

what could this be that would lock up the entire front end and then just subside like this??
