my 79 scirocco (which I just bought there) is being driven from California
by my nephew. the car has been running great until he got to Indianapolis,
where the car suddenly developed this problem that was diagnosed by a
mechanic there as a faulty fuel pump. this was changed this afternoon, along
with the fuel filter, but the problem has not gone away. the mechanic
doesn't work on weekends, so my nephew is stranded there till Monday. I'm
hoping someone can shed some light on what else to check. I've told my
nephew to go over all the vacuum lines, distributor, coil wires and air tube
and boot. the car has also got a very erratic tachometer, which I'm
wondering if the coil is bad. I don't know how the mechanic condemned the
fuel pump, but he said the original was weak. I sure hope he cracked a fuel
line and saw little or insufficient fuel flow. so, what would cause this
condition which seems like the car is starving for fuel, but may in fact be
something else. I realize this is hard to diagnose from this limited info,
but its all I've got right now. if the problem is ignition related, could
the coil be suspect? geez, my poor nephew will be stuck there till Monday!
and worse, I've never seen the car in person, and I've been waiting
patiently for it to arrive. there's gotta be something I'm missing. please
help me. I'm hoping to call him tomorrow to offer something to help.
