temps on the rise

My car is acting a little strange.  I have a new water pump I put on
during my swap.  The temp is fine during normal driving, but when I
start keeping the rpms high, is starts to rise to the max.  If I back
off, it will slowly come down.  If I turn on the heater, it helps alot,
but even with that on, 10 minutes of 5000+ driving has the temp climbing
fast.  When I had the JH in, the temp stayed in the middle no matter
what.  I'm running 6* advance with a vacuum advance distributer.  My
thoughts were the therostat is bad.  Should I just go and get a new one?
