my clutch problem: the mechanics input

well, a mechanic came to look at the car today.  he started it up and 
listened to it and puched the clutch and shifted a few times.  he says i 
probably have the disk in backwards.  ill flip it around myself (he said 
it'd be $300 if he did it) but i was wondering if i could get a few more 
opinions on which way it is supposed to go first.  from 2 sources before i 
understood that the side with writing (also the side with the longest 
protruding part in the center) faced the flywheel and not the engine.  i am 
100% certain that thats how it is facing now.  any input before i pull the 
tranny for the 3rd time would be appreciated.
