Speaking of turbos and superchargers.....



I believe turmat was a belt/gear driven centrifugal compressor. Basically one half of a turbo
directly driven from the engine. The problem with it is that a large step-up in rpm is necessary
(~10x). Also you dont get the same smooth torque curve of a supercharger due to using a centrifugal
pump vs. positive displacement. You dont get any lag as in turbo lag, but you do get lower boost at
low rpm (as compared to supercharger), since centrifugal pumps delta-p is squared as compared to
shaft speed. The method by which a supercharger creates its boost pressure is directly controlled by
the length of the induction piping and the flow rate difference between the charger and the engine.
