pulling engine without hoist?

  Bite it and BUY one!!   You'll thank yourself every time you use it or
your friends use it.  (you DO have a Vanagon, right?)   :)
Besides, nothing gives the impression that you are a real, expert car-guy
like a hoist in yer garage.  All your new-found friends will think, "Dude!
This man is SERIOUS."
You can get a decent one for under $300.  You'll spend a large percentage of
that $300 in rental fees and time/trouble to reserve/pick up/return the
rented unit.
