Ouch thats ho!!

  you don't say just how long you are cranking that starter......  it's
normal for A) the cable to get hot and B) the starter to slow down IF YOU
CRANK LONG ENOUGH!   Are you talking 15 seconds of cranking or 10 minutes?
Find out why the damn thing isn't firing up and fix THAT.
