What kind of gas

Depends on what level of performance you are willing to pay for.
Without a knock sensor, you can dial back the ignition timing to let you run
on regular, albeit at somewhat lower power.
With a 16V, the knock sensor will take care of detonation by dialing back
the timing for you, with the same results.
I look at it this way: it costs me about one dollar more to fill up with
premium.
 A small price to pay.
